See the Lyric Video for Johnny Cash’s “Out Among the Stars”

Johnny and June Carter Cash, who both died in 2003 within months of each other, left behind literally hundreds of items and collectibles.

“After they passed away,” their son John Carter Cash explained to Country Weekly, “it became necessary to go through them.”

A couple of years ago, John Carter uncovered a basically forgotten album that Johnny had recorded in the early 1980s, Out Among the Stars. The record, produced by the renowned Billy Sherrill, came at a time when Johnny was not enjoying a great deal of chart success and had fallen out of favor with his record label.

As such, the 12-track album, featuring Johnny’s duets with June and his friend Waylon Jennings, was never released. But now, some 30 years later, fans have the golden opportunity to finally hear the record. The rediscovered and resurrected Out Among the Stars was released to stores and Internet retailers this past March.

“Columbia was trying to figure out what to do with [Out Among the Stars],” John Carter says. “They never released the album. They literally put it on the back shelf. So, now, here is this wonderful body of work from a period in my dad’s life that people don’t know as much about. What a blessing to have it.”
