Eclectic duo PawnShop kings—brothers Scott and Joel Owen—released their engaging PsK EP earlier in 2014, and its mix of roots music, gospel and British Invasion made it immediately stand out from the crowd. The brothers, who were raised in California but have family roots in the South, have released a series of videos tracing their history and discussing their music, which you can see right here.

“I’m not even sure, I don’t know what sets our music apart,” says Joel in the clip. “I think the fact that it’s pretty much our two voices, the way we blend as brothers, that family thing that’s been happening forever.”

“The best stuff that we do takes the least effort of trying to do it,” agrees Scott. “It’s usually the stuff that’s just an honest expression of who you are, unaffected, that sets you apart. Like Joel said, there’s only two guys that sound like we can sound. Whether we want to or not, this is our sound.”

Check back for parts 2 and 3 over the next two weeks.
