STORY BEHIND THE SONG ...

"Ain't Nothing 'Bout You"

If you find that your shining moments of inspiration come in the shower, you're not alone. On the day they wrote Brooks & Dunn's smash hit, "Ain't Nothing 'Bout You," songwriters Tom Shapiro and Rivers Rutherford drew from that same inspiring, water-drenched place.

"I really was in the shower," begins Tom with a laugh, "and was thinking of a different way to say, 'I love everything about you.' I got on this kick, 'there's nothing about you I don't like,' and the line 'there's nothing about you' stuck with me. I wrote that down and basically used it as a title."

That same day, Rivers nervously faced the morning as he stood in his shower. "I'm thinking that I'm supposed to write for the first time with Tom Shapiro, one of the top songwriters in Nashville, and I don't have a single idea," he recalls with a chuckle.

"But then I thought of this melody, and the words - I got this feeling in the deep part of my heart for you - came pouring out. When I met with Tom, I played that much for him and we kept going with it."

At one dramatic point, Tom devised the all-important hook - there ain't nothing 'bout you that don't do something for me. "I really liked that play of opposites, 'nothing' and 'something.' It was just putting words together, but it seemed to work," notes Tom. "I think I had it as 'that don't do something to me,' but Rivers liked for instead, so we kept that."

One minor change, though, happened after Brooks & Dunn hit the studio. "They left out a part of the final tag," Tom explains. "What we had originally was, 'the way you dance, the way you drive,' but when Ronnie Dunn got to that line, he ran out of breath. He changed it to, 'your dance, your drive,' and I loved it. It was just one of those great accidents that happen sometimes."

But the song's huge success - six weeks at No. 1 - was no fluke. "It had a great hook and a chorus that people could really latch on to," observes Rivers. "This is my first No. 1 and I'm still totally amazed. You write all your life and then, in one afternoon, a song just kind of falls out. And it changes your whole life!"

"Ain't Nothing 'Bout You"
Written by Tom Shapiro and Rivers Rutherford
Performed by Brooks & Dunn

Once I thought that love
Was something I could never do
Never knew that I could feel this much
But this yearning in the deep part of my heart for you
Is more than a reaction to your touch
It's a perfect passion and I can't get enough

CHORUS

The way you look, the way you laugh
The way you love with all you have
There ain't nothing 'bout you
That don't do something for me
The way you kiss, the way you cry
The way you move when you walk by
There ain't nothing 'bout you
That don't do something for me
In my life I've been hammered by some heavy blows
That never knocked me off my feet
All you gotta do is smile at me and down I go
And, baby, it's no mystery why I surrender
Girl, you got everything

CHORUS

I love your attitude, your rose tattoo
Your every thought, your smile, your lips
And, girl, the list goes on and on and on

CHORUS

The way you look, the way you laugh
The way you love with all you have
Your dance, your drive, you make me feel alive
The way you talk, the way you tease
Right now I think you see
There ain't nothing 'bout you
That don't do something for me
