Away from his regular gig as frontman for Texas alt-country band The Old 97s, Rhett Miller is freer to indulge his sweet tooth for catchy pop melodies. This self-titled effort, his first solo album since 2006’s The Believer, is no exception—tracks like “If It’s Not Love” and the opening “Nobody Says I Love You Anymore” have the pre-psychedelia ring of mid-’60s Brit-rock. But while Rhett Miller goes down agreeably easy, there’s something oddly reticent about it that keeps this sweet treat from sticking to the ribs like it should.
