Here’s the deal: Buddy Miller is one of country music’s most talented guitarists, vocalists and producers; his wife, Julie, is one of country music’s most talented singers and songwriters. Each regularly appears on the other’s solo albums, but when the contributions are more or less equal they’re billed as a duo—which apparently happens about once every eight years, the interim since their joint-billing debut Buddy & Julie Miller was released. Like that album, the more ethereal Written in Chalk is dominated by Julie’s writing, Buddy’s musical settings and the soulful, emotionally raw vocals of both.
