“Wake Up Lovin’ You” by Craig Morgan

It seems the world just wasn’t ready for “Corn Star.” And if the failure of that, excuse us, corny single, paved the way for a more serious Craig Morgan, then we can’t say we’re all that brokenhearted.

Because it’d have been a shame to miss out on the success that is “Wake Up Lovin’ You,” Craig’s latest single. The first song from a new album due this fall, “Wake Up Lovin’ You” is a ballad akin to Randy Houser’s “Anything Goes” or even Kristofferson’s “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” one full of regret for the previous night’s transgressions. The narrator has lost the woman he loves, either to another man or to death, and looks for comfort in one-night stands, whiskey and cheap motels.

However, the result never changes: He continues to wake up loving his ex. It’s dark stuff for Craig—this isn’t “Redneck Yacht Club”—for once a song that doesn’t offer any hint of redemption. Instead, the main character is doomed to repeat his bad behavior, eternally pushing a rock of shame uphill only to have it roll back down.
