Tuxedo Country: Twenty Classic Instrumentals

Country shares plenty of its genetic material with jazz—witness the continuing vitality of Western swing—so it’s no surprise that Texas-based clarinetist Tom Houston and his 15-piece big band have no trouble adapting standards like “Hey, Good Lookin’” and “Stand By Your Man” to their ballroom-bound sound. More recent compositions like Kris Kristofferson’s “Help Me Make It Through the Night” don’t lend themselves quite as easily to the format, but Tom and company make it work—certainly well enough for a spin around the dance floor.
