Trying to Be Me

If you’re not crying by the end of Laura Bryna’s debut album, it won’t be for lack of effort. Trying to Be Me is packed with some of the most over-the-top tear-jerkers in recent memory, hammering away at emotional hot buttons like alcoholism (“She Can’t Save Him”), spousal abuse (“Maybe She Fell”), dying soldiers (“640 Battlefield Dr.”) and terminally ill children (the current single, “Make a Wish”). The more upbeat, up-tempo tracks are distinguished by Laura’s Tammy Wynette-ish voice—but enjoy them knowing there’s yet another melodramatic tragedy coming up in a few minutes.
