Toby Keith 35 Biggest Hits

Sequenced in strict chronological order and covering his entire career (the first compilation to do so), the two-CD 35 Biggest Hits tells the tale of how Toby Keith developed his artistic persona—how he transformed from Toby the solid singer/songwriter to Toby the butt-kicking “Big Dog.”

His 1990s material, covered on the first disc, finds Toby casting about for a direction that will separate him from the torrent of “hat acts” that flooded country during that decade.

He hits upon it near the end of disc one with “How Do You Like Me Now?!” That song’s blustery braggadocio set the tone for the songs on the second disc, which sums up his output from 2001 to 2006. During that period he was usually either playing up his established persona (“Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue [The Angry American]”) or playing against it (“My List”).

Unfortunately, the new track “She’s a Hottie” is too slight to do either—its most profound insight is Hottie / She’s a hottie / Got a smokin’ little body.
