Sunny Sweeney EP

This Texas native’s sophomore offering checks in at a slim five tracks compared to 2006’s full-length Heartbreaker’s Hall of Fame, but though it lacks quantity, that’s atoned for with quality. Sunny co-wrote every song on this collection, and has a clear preference for fractured relationships. Twice, Sunny takes on the role of the other woman. In “Amy,” she pleads her case with her lover’s wife, asking her to either treat her man right or “let him leave.” On her current single, “From a Table Away,” she portrays a woman who discovers, while watching from the dim shadows of a restaurant, that her lover still has feelings for (and dealings with) his wife. Her nasal Texas drawl is unmistakable on the courageous honky-tonkers “Drink Myself Single” and “Helluva Heart.” With homespun songs that are equally witty, smart and gutsy, Sunny is ready to join the likes of Gretchen Wilson and fellow Texan Miranda Lambert on the current short list of unabashedly country female singers.
