The Sound of a Million Dreams by David Nail

David Nail’s instinctive infusion of country music with soul and R&B has been catching the ears of radio listeners, first with his 2009 Top 10 single, “Red Light,” and now with his sophomore album’s first single, “Let It Rain.” The new album’s 11 polished tracks are distinguished by higher-quality lyrics than are often found on country radio.

In “She Rides Away,” David portrays a free-spirited girl with the poetic line, She flies as wild as the wind on the border of Laredo. “Half Mile Hill” finds old drunks and dreamers both searching for something. “Grandpa’s Farm” also appears on guitar rocker Frankie Ballard’s debut disc, though David steers the song toward soul, aided by a spirited gospel choir. He tones things down with the understated yet passionately performed “Songs for Sale,” featuring Lee Ann Womack, while the amorous “Catherine” gets a vocal lift from roots-rocker Will Hoge. David’s version of “Desiree,” while earnest, lacks the affecting rawness of Keith Urban’s version from his early days with The Ranch.

Though David’s tenor sounds akin to that of Rascal Flatts’ Gary LeVox at times, David could be country music’s most soulful singer since Ronnie Dunn.
