“Shoot Straight” by Michaelis

The challenge that faces women who are trying to break into the music industry is finding that unique quality that sets them apart from other females in the format. Evidently, sisters Meagan, Mallory and Madeline Michaelis were up for the challenge. Not only did they accept it, they blew it out of the water with their debut single, “Shoot Straight.”

More earthy than ethereal, the girls have the good fortune of having that familial harmony that makes their voices blend seamlessly. But beyond that, in a world of oversinging chicks trying to be the next Martina or Carrie, their voices are relaxed, easygoing and effortless, giving them a sultry, smoky feel.

And the song isn’t angry or even angst-filled. It’s simply a plea for the truth: Losing you might tear me apart / Let’s just pretend I’ve got a bullet-proof heart / You can leave, just don’t leave me in the dark.

And honestly, although the lyric might imply otherwise, the plea isn’t even desperate. They know the answer already, they just need you to man up, grow a pair and “shoot straight.” That’s likely that innate swagger that’s born in every Texan talking.
