Red River Blue by Blake Shelton

After the success of his “six-pack” album concept with Hillbilly Bone, Blake is back to delivering a full-length offering of music. “Drink on It” and “Get Some” are classic partying songs, designed to make listeners want to fill their Dixie cups with something cold and raise them up high. Blake, who with his smooth baritone can deliver most songs with authenticity, promises he’ll do anything to win a woman in “Over,” then hands down a fine kiss-off with “I’m Sorry” (featuring background vocals by Martina McBride), which highlights his flexible, muscular voice at its best. “God Gave Me You” is the romantic zenith of the album.

On past recordings, Blake has had the unfortunate tendency at times to choose upbeat songs lacking in both wit and substance; the missteps “Hey” and “Sunny in Seattle” continue the trend. Luckily, the album closes with the glittering ballad “Red River Blue,” featuring wife Miranda Lambert.
