Rebel Meets Rebel

*** ½

The rebels in question are country outlaw David Allan Coe and the Cowboys From Hell—actually three-fourths of now-disbanded heavy metallers Pantera. The dozen appealingly debauched odes to drugs, sex and more drugs on this blazing set were recorded over several years leading up to the tragic onstage murder of guitarist Dimebag Darrell on Dec. 8, 2004, making Rebel Meets Rebel an unintended testament to the late axe-slinger’s astonishing fretboard wizardry. But the tragic circumstances of Rebel’s release shouldn’t distract from country veteran David Allan, who stands toe to toe with the Cowboys’ pummeling, pulverizing metal.
