A Prairie Home Companion: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

** ½

The soundtrack to the movie based on Garrison Keillor’s longrunning radio show fortunately wipes a layer of smug self-satisfaction off its source material, thanks to the exuberance of the actors-turned-singers behind the microphone (including Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin and Woody Harrelson). The standout is a spirited take on “Frankie & Johnny” from teen queen Lindsay Lohan, who makes the most of her vocal limitations by throwing herself into the song unrestrainedly. But when the professionals like Robin and Linda Williams and Garrison himself take over, it’s sleepy time again.
