Platinum by Miranda Lambert

Just when you thought you had seen all of the colors and designs that make up Miranda Lambert, she turns the wheel and sends the gems tumbling into all new, amazing patterns. The newest kaleidoscope in her collection is made of platinum, and you’d do well to give it a spin.

Ran isn’t deviating from who she is or what she’s done in the past. Her sassy collaboration with Carrie Underwood, “Somethin’ Bad,” has that piss and vinegar attitude that we expect and want from this Texas tornado.

But in a different stroke of genius, she honors her home state in a way we haven’t previously heard from her with the Texas swing number “All That’s Left,” featuring Nashville’s pride and joy, The Time Jumpers.

Her succinctly titled “Old Sh*t” is another image-evoking, smile-inducing track complete with vinyl scratches that hearken back to the days when front-porch jams included harmonica, washboard, boot stomps and moonshine jug.

The fun “Another Sunday in the South” has her name-checking hit country songs from the ’90s and feels comfortably familiar despite its newness, thanks to Miranda’s uniquely honest vocal. And speaking of honesty, “Holding On to You” is as much about that perfect blend of blues and country, as it is Miranda’s vocal grit and honey.

It may have been a bit of foreshadowing to name the album Platinum, and perhaps a little law of attraction at play. Although the title is also an album track referring to hair color, the depth of this project goes further than Miranda’s roots.
