Nashville Volume 1: Tear the Woodpile Down by Marty Stuart

Marty has long kept the flame of traditional country music burning with some of the most creative albums in the past 30-plus years. On his latest, Marty meshes country with Memphis rockabilly and bluegrass-inspired background vocals throughout the disc, particularly on the album’s blistering title track.

Six of the 10 tracks, including “Going, Going, Gone” and “Truck Drivers’ Blues,” were penned solely by Marty. He embraces two cover songs; “Holding On to Nothin’,” a 1968 single from Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton, and the Hank Williams tune “A Picture From Life’s Other Side,” on which Marty is joined by the legend’s grandson, Hank III.

Lorrie Carter Bennett, granddaughter of Maybelle Carter of The Carter Family, lends her voice to “A Song of Sadness,” on which Marty searches for musical medicine in a home where the silence is loud as thunder. He takes critical aim at a country boy’s Hollywood, as he refers to Nashville in “Sundown in Nashville,” where at night they sweep broken dreams off the streets.
