Four years after his passing, history is still taking the full measure of Waylon Jennings’ contribution to country music. A (nearly) comprehensive new four-CD box set, the aptly titled Nashville Rebel, is a carefully articulated argument for Waylon’s place on country’s Mount Rushmore. Every major hit and important album track has been carefully included here, sequenced in strict chronological order to let Outlaw history speak for itself. Unfortunately, Waylon’s 1990s renaissance is skipped—but what’s here is simply astonishing.
