The concept behind Tanya Tucker’s My Turn seems disappointingly gimmicky at first, given the seven-year wait fans have endured since her previous album: it’s a covers set whose songs are associated with male singers. But My Turn amounts to a lot more than a gimmick, for a couple of reasons. First is the fact that many of the songs were favorites of Tanya’s late father, Beau, and the singer’s deep connection to them is audible. Second is her own brash persona—Tanya was never a shrinking violet, so a little extra assertiveness is no problem.

The most heartening thing about My Turn, though, is that by a few minutes into the album you’ll probably have forgotten about its high concept. This is first and foremost a powerful singer taking on songs that she feels down to her bones, with the added comfort of crisp old-school settings provided by producer Pete Anderson. Here’s hoping Tanya’s next turn comes around in a little less than seven years—and that it’s as enjoyable as this one.
