Chris’ first album since 2005 finds him mining much the same Southern-rock-tinged territory he did on his previous effort, Anywhere but Here. Country Song is punchier and more focused than its predecessor, with a decided lean toward wry love-gone-wrong songs like the Top 20 hit “What Kinda Gone.” Unfortunately, a handful of iffy tunes keeps Country Song from really sticking to the ribs—the self-referential twist in “No Love Songs” comes off a tad corny, and “Little Sundress” is the kind of fun-on-the-beach song that apparently every male country star is legally required to record these days.
