Ricky returns to the full-band sound that garnered him numerous country hits on this collection of inspirational songs. Producer Gordon Kennedy, known for his work with Bonnie Raitt and Eric Clapton, employs heavy contemporary Christian-pop and rock instrumentation, giving Ricky’s rich voice room to stretch. A 12-voice choir and stellar guitar work by Peter Frampton grace “My Cup Runneth Over,” making for an interesting marriage between Ricky’s pure, earnest vocal and the song’s pop-rock backing, which recalls U2’s work. The graphic lyrics of “Can’t Shake Jesus” vividly recount the biblical story of the Crucifixion and Resurrection, while “Return to Sender” features a tranquil orchestra and choir backing, highlighting standout lyrics such as Write with chisel when I’m gone / ‘Return to Sender’ on my stone. As its title suggests, Mosaic blends musical integrity and uplifting, thoughtful lyrics with artful results.
