Mission California

Ragweed leader Cody Canada stumbles out of the gate by leading off his band’s sixth studio album with “Record Exec,” a defensive plaint about how he refuses to sell out despite being signed to a Nashville record label. Luckily, the rest of Mission California is a little easier to relate to, as Oklahoma-based Cody and his hard-touring crew serve up their most focused, polished and well-written studio effort to date. Best of all is Cody’s own “Lawrence,” a finely observed story about a homeless family that’s far more compelling than any music-biz rant.
