Leona Williams Sings Merle Haggard

Leona Williams Sings Merle Haggard is as straightforward as its title—15 classics performed in traditional-country settings with no fuss, frills or fluff. As Merle’s ex-wife and onetime duet partner (and the author of his 1983 chart-topper “You Take Me for Granted,” included here), Leona has a firm grasp on these tunes and delivers them confidently in a clear, ageless voice. Most of the song choices are unsurprising, although the rejiggering for gender—“Workin’ Man Blues” become “Workin’ Girl Blues,” for instance—can’t help but shed some new light.
