Leona Williams Sings Merle Haggard

leonawilliams_cdcvr08_v_e.jpg

Leona Williams Sings Merle Haggard is as straightforward as its title—15 classics performed in traditional-country settings with no fuss, frills or fluff. As Merle’s ex-wife and onetime duet partner (and the author of his 1983 chart-topper “You Take Me for Granted,” included here), Leona has a firm grasp on these tunes and delivers them confidently in a clear, ageless voice. Most of the song choices are unsurprising, although the rejiggering for gender—“Workin’ Man Blues” become “Workin’ Girl Blues,” for instance—can’t help but shed some new light. (Available from select online outlets, including etrecordshop.com and leonawilliams.com.)
