That Just Happened by Mountain Heart

We make our own rules / Anything goes, sings bluegrass ensemble Mountain Heart’s lead singer, Josh Shilling, on the opening number, “That Just Happened.” The band lives up to its declaration, kicking off the album with a sound that hails more from the Southern-rock core of Georgia or the blues-drenched Louisiana bayou than the hills of Kentucky.

Comprised of six young men who have collectively woven an impressive list of credits (working with Carrie Underwood, Ricky Skaggs, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton and others), Mountain Heart injects enthusiasm and energy throughout this project.

The blues-and-bluegrass mix continues on the high-octane “Same Old Heartache” before breaking down on the lush but syrupy, Rascal Flatts-esque “Even if It Breaks My Heart.”

A trio of covers rounds out the short set, including the classic murder tale “Little Sadie,” David Allan Coe’s “The Ride” and The Allman Brothers Band’s “Whipping Post.”

This band’s mix of country, bluegrass, blues and rock should fit comfortably beside newgrass contemporaries such as The Infamous Stringdusters and The Grascals.
