It’s been well over a decade since Joe Nichols released his self-titled 1996 debut, which gave country music a fresh neo-traditionalist singer blessed with a resonant tone reminiscent of Randy Travis.

It wasn’t until 2002 that audiences caught on to Joe’s breakout hit, the inspiring, sentimental “The Impossible.” Since that time, his career has been dotted with three No. 1 singles: “Gimmie That Girl,” “Brokenheartsville” and “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off,” all of which are included here.

The plight of a greatest-hits collection is that many times, an artist’s finest moments don’t translate into solid radio hits. So, deserving gems like the stark, transparent “An Old Friend of Mine” or Joe’s take on “No Time to Cry” (also recorded by Merle Haggard) are regrettably not among the 10 tracks on this hits-only set.

While Joe’s lighthearted fare is well-catalogued here, one would do well to dig deeper into lesser-known, older album tracks that make it clear Joe’s train doesn’t only stop at Brokenheartsville.
