It’s a Good Day

The music of Asleep at the Wheel has been intertwined with that of the Texas Playboys since the beginning, when the members of the Wheel found their musical home in the heart of Austin, Texas. The two Western swing bands have appeared together on Austin City Limits, and the Wheel has recorded a couple of tribute albums to the Playboys and frontman Bob Wills. Here they continue the long-lasting musical partnership by teaming up with longtime Playboys vocalist Leon Rausch, who regularly sat in with the Wheel during the 1970s. Leon is credited with inspiring AATW’s version of “Get Your Kicks (On Route 66),” which is included in this set. They cover Bob Wills classics such as “Sugar Moon” and “Cotton Patch Blues,” while Willie Nelson makes an appearance on “Truck Driver’s Blues.” When classic songs are expertly performed by the masters of Western swing, it’s a good day, indeed.
