I Love: Tom T. Hall’s Songs of Fox Hollow by Various Artists

On “Harper Valley P.T.A.” and “Carroll County Accident,” tunesmith Tom T. Hall clearly revealed the deceitful ways of the adult world. Fortunately, that isn’t the only place where his songs resided.

His 1974 Songs of Fox Hollow album bustled with lighthearted and affirming tunes—tunes still beloved by many, including Americana artists Peter Cooper and Eric Brace, who have affectionately reworked that kid-friendly collection, inviting an eclectic list of musical playmates.

Cooper and Brace don’t just apply a fresh coat of paint; they pull out the 64-count Crayola box, expanding the original album’s tonal color range and emotional depth with inspired contributions from guests including Patty Griffin, Bobby Bare and Duane Eddy.

While the original album’s more delicate vocals and warm, rustic quality might more readily captivate little ears, this updated version fully embraces the all-ages potential of these songs. In spirit, this is the same fun, fanciful farm visit that Tom T. once envisioned—and as remakes go, this one is an egg that does the chicken proud.
