Home for the Holidays

Trio Point of Grace first made the semi-transition from a Christian radio staple to pop-country group with No Changin’ Us, released earlier this year, and the threesome continues in that direction on this holiday offering.

Co-produced here by Nathan Chapman (Taylor Swift), the group’s tightly intertwined vocals are comparable to those of another country trio, SHeDAISY, on their previously released Christmas disc. While SHeDAISY pushed the boundaries of country holiday recordings with pepperings of R&B and progressive vocal arrangements, the members of Point of Grace haven’t yet reached a point in their country transition to brave as many creative risks, so they play it safe with sugary-sweet country arrangements of “White Christmas,” “Immanuel” and “Little Drummer Boy.” On the harmonica-frosted “Holly Jolly Christmas,” they pay tribute to all those little details—mistletoe hung on the door, unwanted gifts—that remind listeners it really is the holiday season. The trio is at its frolicking best on “Candy Cane Lane,” complete with fiddle and steel guitar. This outing is for those who prefer to celebrate Christmas with a little Southern flavor.
