Have a Merry Little Christmas Darling by Sarah Darling

Sarah Darling has been perpetually looking for the hit that will finally break her. Now in between labels, the 31-year-old has taken a respite to independently release a holiday EP, the somewhat somber Have a Merry Little Christmas Darling.

A short set of four mostly piano-based songs, the project showcases the jazzier side of Sarah’s vocals.

Three tracks are holiday staples: “The Christmas Song,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” and “Silent Night,” and all are ideal for nesting in front of the fireplace.

But it’s Sarah’s cover of Joni Mitchell’s “River” that distinguishes the EP. Much like “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” (oddly not included, given the EP’s title), “River” is that kind of bittersweet holiday song that makes you sadly grateful for all that you have—or had and lost.
