Fire On The Strings (Sony Music/Legacy Recordings)

Album Cover

The latest installments in Sony Music's ongoing "American Milestones" series - offering lovingly remastered classic albums, all studded with rare bonus tracks - spotlight some of country's more eclectic, underappreciated and sometimes rebellious artists.

Chief in the underappreciated category would be Joe Maphis, who fairly reinvented country guitar playing in the 1950s by flatpicking demonically fast runs on his double-necked instrument. Joe's 1957 Fire On The Strings album found him transforming traditional banjo and fiddle songs into jaw-dropping guitar showcases.
