Katie Armiger has had the unenviable task of growing up in the spotlight. The 21-year-old Texas native released her first album at 15 and now, on her fourth album, Fall Into Me, it’s clear she’s gotten a taste of the ups and downs of dating. Love and its many guises—from the first tingle to the ache of loss—is the focus of Fall Into Me, for which Katie co-wrote every song.

It isn’t all sunshine and roses. Backed by handclaps, a big guitar riff and a thumping beat, Katie comes out swinging at a no-good dude on album opener “He’s Gonna Change.” Similarly, upcoming single “Playin’ With Fire” offers a righteous gospel choir and story of recklessly jumping into a volatile relationship. In “Cardboard Boxes,” Katie examines the dividing of possessions post-breakup and asks what went wrong.

A few tracks, such as “Baby You’re Everything,” suffer from by-the-numbers production and lyrics that don’t quite stick. Regardless, Katie has full command of her big voice. 

Mostly, she sounds hopeful. In “Safe,” Katie desires to find a love that makes her feel protected. She may be young, but that’s a lesson we can all take to heart.
