“Drinks After Work” by Toby Keith

Toby Keith appears to be ordering another round for the bar with his new single, “Drinks After Work.” The tune is the first release from the forthcoming follow-up to Hope on the Rocks and is an ode to an innocent office romance that is pursued—where else?—during happy hour.

While “light, fun and bouncy” are not words we typically associate with a Toby Keith cut, they seem an accurate description after a few rounds of “Drinks.” Lyrically, the song is 100 percent Toby. Even though he didn’t have a hand in penning this one (it was written by the trio behind Little Big Town’s “Pontoon”), it’s full of the clever turns of phrase that don’t seem out of place for the Okie singer/songwriter. And his whiskey-soaked vocals are as easily identifiable and familiar as ever, showcasing his broad baritone-to-bass range.

At first blush, the song’s arrangement is unexpected and seems a bit electronic for what we expect from Toby, but, sure enough, it becomes more intoxicating and compelling. In fact, the sassy tempo could help make “Drinks After Work” one of the hottest singles of the summer—shaken, not stirred.
