“Cut Me Some Slack” by Chris Janson

OK, so we’ve had some fun lately at the expense of songs that talk about girls, country roads and trucks. “Cut Me Some Slack,” the latest single from Missouri outlaw Chris Janson, puts all of them to use, but offers a slight twist on the idea for positive effect.

Set over a mid-tempo Southern rock groove, Chris sings in a hip-hop cadence to a woman whom he’d love to get to know better but who remains aloof.

Where Luke Bryan’s “That’s My Kind of Night” demands of his lady friend, Girl, hand me another beer, “Cut Me Some Slack” offers more of a confident sales pitch. I wish you’d give me the green light, give me just one night, he pleads when the chorus hits, suggesting that she might actually enjoy a night of the country road revelry with him if she’d just give him a chance. After that she’s free to never call and forget that he even exists.

On the problematic side, the song’s production feels generic, like it’s supposed to blend in on country radio. And Chris, who caught our attention with the rowdy single “Better I Don’t,” was made to stand out.
