Cherryholmes IV: Common Threads

Cherryholmes.jpg

There are few things that sound as natural as family harmony. This six-member group, made up of two parents and their four children, soothes with its custom blend of bluegrass with Southern-gospel and jazz leanings. Primary lead vocalist and older daughter Cia’s voice, backed with mother Sandy’s rich mandolin work, sounds particularly aching as she searches for an elusive romantic dream on “The Harder I Fall” and “When It’s Not With Me Every Day.” Meanwhile, Cia and younger brother Skip share some lush harmonies on the bridge of “It’s Your Love.” Older brother B.J. takes the lead on the fiery banjo- and fiddle-laden “Idle Minds,” while Sandy’s smoky, dramatic voice entices on soulful gospel-styled numbers like “Changed in a Moment” and “Standing.” “Weaver of Lies” showcases younger daughter Molly’s sultry confession of the dark, deceptive side of humanity, while her jazzy side shows on “I Am Your Conscience.” These threads are anything but common.
