Billy Gilman

They still call me Billy the Kid, sings the now 18-year-old Billy Gilman on the opening track of his fifth album. Just as that song suggests, it’s proven difficult for audiences to shake the memory of the precocious 12-year-old who took “One Voice” to the Top 20 in 2000. Billy has hopscotched between pop and country since then, all the while singing material that wasn’t as good as his voice. Billy’s direction still doesn’t seem quite as sure as his formidable talent, but Billy Gilman is his most focused and mature album yet. In its finest moments, the Kid sounds like Billy the Man at last.
