The Big To-Do

The band’s return to its classic “redneck” rock sound is a welcome change from the conceptually ambitious Southern Rock Opera or the mellow Brighter Than Creation’s Dark. “Daddy Learned to Fly” opens the set on a bedrock of whirling electric guitar sounds, along with a smattering of piano throughout. On “You Got Another,” Shonna Tucker’s angelic voice takes center stage, backed by sparse instrumentation, until the song reaches a crescendo and becomes a driving anthem. The band is particularly tight and politically charged while riding the bold groove of “Get Downtown” and navigating the slightly sinister murder ballad “The Wig He Made Her Wear.” The group has weathered its share of lineup changes, but singer/songwriters Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley have maintained a certain level of lyrical integrity on songs like “The Flying Wallendas” or “It’s Gonna Be (I Told You So).” For fans who yearn for the band’s soul- and country-rock-inspired tunes, this is not to be overlooked.
