As revealed throughout The Band Perry’s debut album, this promising sibling trio’s dreamy, poetic sound is adequately commercial, but more introspective and engrossing than typical radio fare.

Kimberly Perry’s voice is refreshingly unpolished, leaning more on a sassy personality than auditory perfection. The modest hit “If I Die Young,” a tale of the grief acknowledging the sharp knife of a short life, showcases a songwriting prowess that belies the trio’s youth.

Where the band’s first single, “Hip to My Heart,” was a sprightly, lighthearted number meant to catch country radio’s attention, the group makes better use of its acoustic-based sound on the rest of the album.

The siblings’ harmonies are sweet as Kimberly pleads to be a guy’s only girl on “All Your Life” and belts out the earthy and passionate “Walk Me Down the Middle.” With “Queen Maybelline,” the young newcomers boldly take on the topic of abandoned children.

Though the lyrics are at times aimless, the trio’s songwriting efforts throughout the disc are commendable.
