All Gone Fishin’

The artists on this collection of fishing tunes find all sorts of unexpected angles on angling. Fishing is a pastime historically dominated by men, whose facets and foibles are a focus here: Jerry Reed finds a metaphor for male competition in the funny “Front of the Boat,” Lorrie Morgan discovers some male philandering in “Something Fishy’s Going On” and Merle Haggard finds an opportunity for male bonding in Harlan Howard’s poignant “Take Him Fishing.”

There are a few such emotional moments scattered through All Gone Fishin’ (available only at Wal-Mart and Bass Pro Shops), but the emphasis is on fun. George Jones loads up on “Beer, Bait and Ammo,” Mel Tillis mugs through the kids’ classic “Three Little Fishies” and Little Jimmy Dickens’ “The Picture” (featuring Brad Paisley on guitar) is a hoot. The only odd song out is Tanya Tucker’s “Sleepwalking”—a lovely, melancholy number that has nothing to do with fishing. Just think of it as a bonus track and reel this CD in—it’s a keeper.
