Album #2 by Joey+Rory

Is it really that hard / Just cut some songs that move you and sing ’em from the heart, intone Joey + Rory on their new album’s fiddle-embroidered opener, “Album Number Two.” Indeed, the duo knows the power of sticking true to its musical roots, and the method hasn’t changed for the twosome’s second outing. Joey Martin’s voice is just as smooth and down-home authentic as on the duo’s first album, just more polished. The couple exchanges tender harmonies on the duet “Born to Be Your Woman,” and Rory Feek’s warm voice is featured on “My Ol’ Man.” The banjo-and-mandolin-laden “Baby I’ll Come Back to You” and “You Ain’t Right” have a good-natured wit that Brad Paisley would appreciate. The duo knows well the perils of the music industry, as shown on “Farm to Fame.” “This Song’s for You” salutes just about everybody, including churchgoers, partiers, patriots and country fans, while the added vocals by Zac Brown Band sound natural and genuine, helping to offset the song’s sometimes syrupy quality. No slick production here, just a culmination of refreshingly substantive tunes sung with integrity.
