40 Years of the Voice

VernGosdin.jpg

In one sense, 40 Years of the Voice is a full-blown bonanza for Vern Gosdin fans—101 songs spread across four CDs showcasing one of the finest country singers ever to step behind a microphone. Among the tracks are such familiar titles as “Chiseled in Stone,” “Today My World Slipped Away” and “Set ’Em Up Joe,” as well as 14 previously unreleased tracks Vern recorded 40 years ago with brother Rex and 10 all-new songs.

But 40 Years of the Voice is also a frustrating missed opportunity. The 77 hits included are actually new re-recordings, a fact the album cover fails to note. The 14 vintage unreleased songs are scattered randomly through the discs, and their sound quality is just not up to snuff. Vern fans will find much to enjoy here, as long as they don’t expect these to be the classic recordings they know and love.
