100% Cowboy

The 2005 Nashville Star runner-up can legitimately lay claim to a title like 100% Cowboy—he grew up roping cattle on a ranch in Oklahoma, and life in the country is the No. 1 topic on his debut album. Jason has a full-bodied honky-tonk voice, and as a songwriter he demonstrates an eye for detail and a knack for unexpected rhymes that brings to mind Alan Jackson. Not everything here clicks (“Fever” features a truly unfortunate hook), but highlights like “San Antone Alone” and the vivid “18 Video Tapes” suggest that this country cowboy has a bright future.
