¡Está Bueno!

The Texas Tornados are back. Sort of. Original members Augie Meyers and Flaco Jiménez have reunited along with Shawn Sahm, the son of the band’s Doug Sahm, who died in 1999. (Both Doug and Freddy Fender—who died in 2006—are represented on the album through recordings they made before their deaths.) Highlights include title cut “Está Bueno” (translation: “It’s Good”), which is a rollicking Augie-penned tune about the perils of eating jalapeño peppers (they were so good but they burned in the rear) and the zany “Velma From Selma.” Meanwhile, “In Heaven There Is No Beer,” a traditional German polka, takes on a decidedly Tejano taste with the help of Flaco’s distinctive accordion work. The album is not likely to win the band any new followers, but for fans of the “ultimate Tex-Mex supergroup,” as they are billed, ¡Está Bueno! scratches an itch that no other group can.
