For the first time in Broadway history, the New York Musical Theatre Festival is bringing country music’s biggest hits to the stage in a new production titled Somewhere With You. Director Peter Zinn and songwriter JT Harding have created a modern country songbook that will hit New York’s The Pershing Square Signature Center July 7–13.
The musical will feature songs made famous by Kenny Chesney (“Somewhere With You”), Uncle Kracker (“Smile”) and Jake Owen ("Alone With You"), among others, all of which were penned by JT Harding.
Somewhere With You is a new generation coming-of-age love story centered around Southerners growing up in the early 2000s, confronted by the methamphetamine epidemic, the war in Iraq and other post-9/11 challenges in the rural South.
While Somewhere With You centers around a love story between an aspiring country music singer and a recovering meth addict, it is also one of the first to chronicle the experience of U.S. soldiers based in Iraq in the early 2000s. The production captures the unique challenges, isolation and emotional despair military members experienced during those initial tours in Iraq and continue to experience today in Afghanistan.
The performances will take place in the Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre July 7–13. Tickets are on sale now through the New York Musical Theatre Festival website.
