The great Ray Price suffered from pancreatic cancer the last few years of his life. But he battled through the illness to record one last album, Beauty Is . . . The Final Sessions, which has now been released. Ray’s wife, Janie, along with the album's producer, Fred Foster, share their memories of this historic recording with Country Weekly in the June 9 issue.
Fred remembers getting a call from Ray, a good friend for more than 50 years, after he had been diagnosed with the cancer. “He thought that he had one more album left in him and he wanted me to produce it,” Fred says. During the recording, Fred adds, “[Ray] never complained one time. He never asked for more time or anything like that.”
The album features Ray in fine voice on romantic classics like “Beautiful Dreamer” and “Among My Souvenirs.” Ray also performs a duet with Martina McBride on “An Affair to Remember,” a tune that Ray's wife, Janie, had suggested. “That’s just my favorite song in the whole world,” she tells Country Weekly.
Beauty Is . . . The Final Sessions was finished about a month before Ray died on Dec. 16 of last year. For more on the album, pick up the June 9 issue of Country Weekly, on newsstands now.
