Lee Ann Womack has signed a recording contract with Sugar Hill Records and Welk Music Group, with a new album ready to release in September 2014. The news was revealed by Hollywood Reporter yesterday (April 9). Previously, Lee Ann was signed with MCA Nashville but parted ways with the imprint in 2012.
“When I was looking for the right home for this record,” said Lee Ann in the article, “I knew I wanted a label where passion for music and artistic integrity drive the decision-making, the people who bring the music to the fans. Beyond the incredible work Sugar Hill has done with Nickel Creek, Sarah Jarosz and Bryan Sutton, they have a broader way of looking at where music can go and why it matters—and for this very personal record, it seemed like the perfect fit.”
What’s more, Lee Ann worked with her producer husband Frank Liddell—who has helmed releases by Miranda Lambert, David Nail and Chris Knight—to put the album together. According to a release, the project was mostly recorded live and will consist of Lee Ann’s versions of songs by acclaimed singer/songwriters such as Neil Young, Buddy Miller, Hayes Carll, Mindy Smith and others.
“I have always loved country music with my entire being,” said Lee Ann, “and I think the gift of a genre that’s built on real life is that there is always room for great songs, and the truth. When we started this record, Frank and I promised each other we would only cut songs that we absolutely loved for no reason other than we loved them very much. No other factors, and I think that freedom really inspired us.”
Most recently, Lee Ann made an appearance on 2013’s Divided & United: The Songs of the Civil War to sing “The Legend of the Rebel Soldier.” Her last full-length album, Call Me Crazy, appeared in 2008.
