When releasing a debut album, it is always good to show plenty of personality and let fans know exactly who you are. With Dan + Shay’s debut, Where It All Began, the duo delivers that very thing. They sing and write about what they know, including plenty of songs about times, rollin’ down the windows and hitting the highway.
Songs like “Stop Drop + Roll,” “Show You Off” and “Parking Brake” will become fan favorites, especially live, as they are peppered with clever lyrics and melodies that will have you singing along by the time the second chorus rolls around. The album’s lead single, “19 You + Me,” remains the album’s standout cut, as it showcases the powerful and beautiful voice of Shay Mooney, which was perfectly captured by duo partner Dan Smyers, who also co-produced the entire project with Danny Orton. Many have already compared the rising duo to Rascal Flatts, whom they appropriately credit as an influence.
One thing that the album could show more of, however, is lyric content other than just the good memories and moments in life. They do tap into their deeper side with the heart-wrenching “I Heard Goodbye,” which highlights Shay’s tender voice.
Dan + Shay have emerged on Where It All Began as true songwriters and vocalists, and still have plenty of directions to go with future albums.
