It was a night of great music benefiting a great cause. Clint Black, Kellie Pickler, Lee Greenwood, The Grascals and surprise guest Luke Bryan were among those joining Charlie Daniels last night (March 25) at Nashville’s David Lipscomb University for the fifth annual Charlie Daniels’ Scholarship for Heroes event.
“They’re not here for me. They’re here for our veterans,” Charlie said of the artists who joined him to honor our nation’s military. “They are here because they want to raise money for our military folks.”
Raising money to provide scholarships for veterans is a cause near and dear to Charlie’s heart and he says the American people feel the same. “The people care. I travel this country border to border every year and the people support our military. We let people know there is a glaring need. There are some young men and women who will not be able to have the quality life that they should have, that they’ve earned, so let’s do something about it.”

Lipscomb University’s Allen Arena was packed and one of the large video screens was constantly projecting tweets from fans enjoying the show. Each year the event features a surprise guest or two and Lee took the stage early in the evening. As the show wound to a close, the crowd went wild as Charlie welcomed Luke to the stage to sing a rousing version of “The South’s Gonna Do It Again.” Luke was obviously thrilled to be performing the classic tune with one of his heroes and the two entertainers had a playful chemistry. At one point Luke displayed one of his signature hip-swiveling dance moves and tried to get Charlie to follow suit. The legendary artist just laughed, picked up a towel and proceeded to wipe Luke’s face.
For the show closing, Charlie welcomed 3 Doors Down’s singer Brad Arnold and bassist Justin Biltonen to the stage. “I got shirt buttons older than these guys are,” Charlie said with a grin looking at Luke, Brad and Justin. Charlie and friends then proceeded to deliver an incendiary performance of “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” Everyone joined Charlie and his famed Charlie Daniels Band onstage to close the evening with “Amazing Grace.”
The event was dedicated to celebrating veterans and raising awareness for the national Veterans Yellow Ribbon education program. The concert was free to the public with donations being taken to benefit the Charlie Daniels Scholarship for Heroes Fund .
