Country Weekly sends congratulations to Loretta Lynn who was presented the Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama today at The White House.
The medal is annually presented to “individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors," according to The White House.
There were diverse list of recipients of the honor this year including former President Bill Clinton, talk show host and humanitarian Oprah Winfrey, feminist Gloria Steinem and University of North Carolina head basketball coach, Dean Smith.
In a White House press release, Loretta was recognized  as “one of the first successful female country music vocalists in the early 1960s, courageously breaking barriers in an industry long dominated by men.” Ms. Lynn’s numerous accolades include the Kennedy Center Honors in 2003 and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.
