With four seasons of The Voice in the books, the show still hasn’t created a breakout star. If we want to continue watching the sparks fly between epic bros Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, it really needs to prove it’s capable of selling records.
So there’s a considerable amount riding on Season 3 winner Cassadee Pope, who has released her debut country single, “Wasting All These Tears.” We know she’s no slouch in the vocal department and this tune gives Cassadee a big, challenging melody to show off her range.
Lyrically it’s from the perspective of a wronged woman who has put herself through the wringer over a guy and has finally decided that it’s time to get over him already. People who watched Cassadee on The Voice will recall that she styled herself as a rock singer, having previously fronted the band Hey Monday. It seems not much has changed with Cassadee’s first country recording—“Wasting All These Tears” sounds a bit like Avril Lavigne plus banjo, particularly when she reaches to hit the word “you” in the chorus.
But if Cassadee needs to meet that elusive sweet spot of Top 40 success, she’s in good hands working with the label team behind Taylor Swift and a song that’s geared to please.
