About three seconds into the voyeuristic video for their latest hit, “Your Side of the Bed,” Little Big Town’s Jimi Westbrook climbs into an all-white, down-comforter-covered bed alongside bandmate/wife Karen Fairchild and reveals a rather large secret—one on his left shoulder.
“It’s actually a tattoo of an eagle, which I have in honor of my dad,” says Jimi during a recent interview with Country Weekly. “My dad was in the Air Force for over 21 years. It’s got his birth date and the day he died. It’s my tribute to him.”
Tributes aren’t anything new for the Little Big Town foursome of Jimi, Karen, Kimberly Schlapman and Phillip Sweet. The band, who will host ABC’s CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock special on Aug. 12, are still receiving praise for their CMT Music Awards rendition of “The Chain,” a tribute to one of their biggest musical influences, Fleetwood Mac.
“There has been a really big reaction to that song,” says Jimi of the performance, which included Keith Urban on guitar. “The first time we played a show after playing it at the CMT Awards, the crowd went crazy. It felt differently than it ever had. The crowds have really been anticipating that moment in our live show, so based on their reaction, we might want to do that one again.”
Little Big Town just might get that chance later this month, as they prepare to embark on Keith Urban’s Light the Fuse Tour 2013 on July 18 in Cincinnati. The first leg of the tour will conclude Oct. 5, after a string of 28 outdoor shows alongside the headlining Aussie.
So it’s safe to say the Country Music Association Group of the Year has already asked Keith to join them to perform “The Chain” again . . . right?
“Can you call and ask him?” Kimberly says, laughing. “I think we will end up collaborating with him, I hope. It would be awesome to play with him onstage every night. We just don’t want to wear him out before his own show.” Keith if you're reading this... you know what to do.
